BREEAM

An Introduction
BREEAM was set up as a way to assess the environmental friendliness of non-residential buildings
The scheme looks at the following broad range of environmental impacts:

•    Management
•    Health and Wellbeing
•    Energy
•    Transport
•    Water
•    Material and waste
•    Land use and Ecology
•    Pollution

How Does BREEAM Work?

•    BRE (British Research Establishment) trains, examines and licenses organisations and individuals to carry out the assessment process
•    There are schemes to cover Offices, Retail, Industrial, Schools, Healthcare, Prisons, Courts and Bespoke services (for other less common building types, e.g. Leisure)
•    Water efficiency can contribute 7% to an excellent rating
•    Assessment can be carried out at the following stages
–    Design and procurement stage
–    Post construction
–    Existing Buildings
•    Credits are awarded based on improvements vs a standard building specification

A standard specification would include:

•    There are 2 types of measurement

Either the installation of specific water efficient products or by coming within a set theoretical water consumption per user of the building
