Showers: Keep it Squeaky Clean

10-Nov-2008

Showers Cleaning Tip 1: Dirty Doors

If you can't see out of your glass shower doors thanks to a layer of unsightly spots, then its time to clean up. These marks are caused by alkaline deposites in the water, and will need special and regular treatment. Twice a year coat the shower's walls and doors with car wax, which helps seal these porous surfaces and keep ugly water spots at bay. To prevent irritating build-up, wipe your shower down after each use, or spritz it with a specialist shower spray.

Showers Cleaning Tip 2: Soap Scum

One of the biggest culprits of creating a dirty-looking bathroom is soap scum, created by the talc in soap that collects on the mineral deposits left when the water dries after use. Start by preventing the problem. Simply switch from standard soap to a natural brand, or to liquid shower gel. Wiping down the shower's walls with lemon oil will also retard the formation of scum. If it's too late, apply either a commercial cleaner (giving it time to dissolve the scum before rinsing it away), or try a more natural product. One effective formula is baking soda and water paste, another is hot white vinegar, sprayed on the walls. Regular repeat applications should keep your shower's unwanted soap scum at bay.

Showers Cleaning Tip 3: Shower Curtains

Mouldy shower curtains are an eyesore in anyone's bathroom, and should be confined to student houses only! Keeping your shower's curtains bright and clean is easy. Take them down, spray with a diluted citrus-based cleanser, and wait ten minutes. Pop them into the washing machine with your rags and dishcloths, and they will come out good as new.

Showers Cleaning Tip 4: Blocked Drains

There's nothing worse than having a relaxing shower before realising you are ankle-deep in water that's not going down the drain. Before you know it you're down on your hands and knees, fishing out hair and grime from your blocked drain – not a great way to start the day! Beat blocked shower drains with this simple procedure: Pour one cup of baking soda, followed by one cup of white vinegar down the drain. Wait an hour then flush with warm water. Do this once a month to dissolve the build-up.

Showers Cleaning Tip 5: Clogged Showerhead

If the water isn't flowing freely from your shower, it may mean that the head has become badly clogged (always check this first before having a plumbing panic). Treat the problem by removing the shower's head attachment and soaking it in vinegar. Poke the dirt out of blocked holes with a pin prior to soaking.
