Shower Cubicle Cleaning Guide

10-Nov-2008

Shower cubicles can be a nightmare to keep clean – especially if you have a large family who all use the shower once a day. Soap scum builds up, the drain gets blocked, the tiles get greasy, and before you know it, that beautiful white shower cubicle you installed is grubby and grimy. To prevent this housework horror, follow these cleaning tips and enjoy a good-as-new shower again.

Shower cubicles are prone to unsightly spots created by alkaline deposits in the water, and can create a major headache for you. Prevent them from forming in the first place by applying car wax to the walls and doors twice a year. This seals the porous surface encouraging the water to run away rather than gather and form these spots. Don't put it on the floor though!

Wipe down your shower cubicle after every use to prevent build-up of alkaline spots.

Avoid soap scum build-up by switching to liquid or natural soap, and cleaning the shower cubicle once a week with a citrus-based cleaner. Leave it on for ten minutes to dissolve the dirt before wiping off.

To get rid of mildew in the shower cubicle, find a specialist product that will work quickly with minimum effort. Three parts bleach to one part water in a spray bottle will be effective. Put on some marigolds if you use a chemical-based product to protect your skin. Spray the walls and floor, the leave for some time. Clean the mildewed areas with a scrubbing brush, starting at the top of the cubicle and working down to the bottom. Rinse with water, and repeat the process with any areas that require extra attention.

Use a specialist glass cleaner on your shower cubicle's doors, or alternatively use white vinegar which leaves glass and mirrors sparkling and clean. Try wiping the product off with newspaper, which will smear less than a cloth.

If your shower cubicle has curtains that have got dirty, wash them on a gentle cycle in your machine with a pint of white vinegar.

For a green way to clean your shower, use the E-Cloths available from Honesty Cosmetics (www.honestycosmetics.co.uk). These cloths will wipe away the thickest dirt and grease using only water – no harsh chemicals required. They can be used for up to 300 times, and even have a consumer award from Allergy UK. Opt for the special Shower Pack, which can help prevent the build-up of dirt and lime scale around your shower cubicle.
